The essential difference between passivation rust prevention and electroplating

Over time, rust spots are inevitable on metal products. Due to variations in metal properties, the occurrence of rust varies. Stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant metal with excellent performance. However, in special environments, there is a need to enhance its corrosion resistance, leading to surface rust prevention treatments. This aims to create a protective layer that prevents corrosion within a specific time and range, achieving anti-oxidation and rust prevention. Two commonly used rust prevention processes are stainless steel passivation and stainless steel plating.

Passivation rust prevention involves forming a complete and dense passivation protective film on the surface of stainless steel. This significantly improves corrosion resistance by more than 10 times, with superior resistance to salt spray. It maintains the original brightness, color, and dimensions of stainless steel.

The essential difference between passivation rust prevention and electroplating

Plating rust prevention involves the appearance of bubbling and peeling on the surface of stainless steel after plating. If not apparent, the surface coating may seem smooth but is susceptible to bending, scratching, and other adhesion tests. For certain stainless steel components with special requirements for plating treatment, appropriate pre-treatment can be applied, followed by electroplating with nickel, chromium, etc., on the surface of stainless steel.

There is no clear distinction in advantages and disadvantages between stainless steel passivation and stainless steel plating; the choice is more about the appropriate selection based on the application scenario. Stainless steel products that can be hidden, such as pipes or support frames, may opt for stainless steel passivation for rust prevention. For visually emphasized stainless steel products, such as artworks, stainless steel plating can be chosen for its variety of colors, bright reflective surfaces, and metallic textures, making it a more suitable option.
